Overview

Bumbu Babah @ Kampung Baru, KL is a vibrant Padang restaurant nestled along Jalan Raja Abdullah in the heart of Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. This spot is well-known for serving authentic nasi Padang — a traditional Indonesian culinary experience that offers a rich variety of flavorful dishes, especially favored by those who appreciate a spicy kick.

Walking into Bumbu Babah, you immediately notice the bustling atmosphere, particularly during lunch hours. The outlet is one of the largest in the area, making it a popular hub for office workers and locals seeking a hearty meal. While the air-conditioned seating area is somewhat limited in size, the restaurant is in the process of expanding to accommodate more guests comfortably. Despite the crowd, the queue moves efficiently thanks to the self-service style of ordering, which, although practical, might feel a bit rushed for those who like to take their time deciding.

The culinary heart of Bumbu Babah lies in its richly spiced dishes. The sambal hijau, a green chili paste, comes highly recommended and represents the restaurant’s commitment to authentic and bold flavors. Many diners find the food quite spicy and deeply satisfying—a signature of true Padang cuisine. The menu is focused mainly on nasi campur, allowing customers to sample an array of small dishes served with rice, ensuring variety on every plate.

In terms of beverage options, choices are modest, limited to soft drinks, mineral water, and a refreshing ice lemon tea. While this keeps the focus on the food itself, a broader drink selection could enhance the overall dining experience. Parking near the restaurant is scarce, an important consideration for those planning a visit by car. However, the central location within Kampung Baru means it is fairly accessible by public transport or on foot for nearby office workers and residents.

Customer service at Bumbu Babah is noted for its warmth and efficiency, with the management team often praised for their attentive approach. This makes the fast-paced environment feel more welcoming, even during the busiest hours. For those who enjoy quick, flavorful meals in a lively urban setting, this restaurant delivers authenticity and robust taste in every bite.

In summary, Bumbu Babah @ Kampung Baru offers a genuine Padang dining experience with a focus on spicy, well-seasoned dishes served in a bustling, communal environment. Its strategic location and strong culinary identity make it a favored destination for spicy food lovers and workers in the vicinity. While the current formats and space have room for improvement, the core of the experience—the food and service—is solid and true to tradition.

Biggest outlet to date and located in the middle of town. Naturally it's a mad house during weekday lunch with long queues but the queues move fast. Food is exactly the same as other outlets. Aircond room could be bigger but apparently they are adding more seats for aircond room.

It was my first time visiting the BUMBU BABAH outlet here in Kuala Lumpur, after hearing countless praises about their dishes from both the Melaka and KL branches — and it truly lived up to the hype. The rice was served piping hot, and both the sambal merah and sambal hijau paired beautifully with the other dishes, including the ulam-ulaman (Malay-style mixed vegetables such as pucuk paku, long beans, and cabbage). For protein, you can choose from crispy chicken like the signature ayam habuk, a variety of beef options such as dendeng and rendang, as well as an assortment of seafood including fish and prawns. Vegetarians also have great choices, including tofu, aubergine, and more. If you opt for the single combo set, it even comes with free iced rose syrup and refillable rice — definitely value for money. A special thanks to Mr. Danish (cashier) and Mr. Mahalel for assisting me during my dinner. Mr. Danish also helped me register for membership, which gives a 10% discount on every dine-in visit. Such warm, friendly and thoughtful service made the whole experience even better. Highly recommended for anyone craving delicious, comforting Malay Nasi Padang cuisine!
